<p>True leadership grows organically, and <a class="Link" href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/bears" target="_blank" >the Bears</a> hope quarterback <a class="Link" href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/bears/2025/08/31/why-do-so-many-people-hate-bears-qb-caleb-williams-he-answers-exactly-that-question" >Caleb Williams</a> is ready to fully step into that role when they open training camp Wednesday.</p><p>It can’t be forced, as it was when Williams was a rookie and the team wanted him to run the show on a roster stocked with veterans. It can’t be rushed, either, as it was a year ago when Williams could barely stay afloat while trying to learn coach Ben Johnson’s offense, let alone worry about what anyone else was doing.</p><p>Training camp was such a nightmare — Johnson was all over him starting with his huddle command and pre-snap process — that <a class="Link" href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/bears/2025/12/23/first-impression-bears-caleb-williams-ben-johnson-mesh-after-rocky-start" >Williams questioned whether his coach liked him</a>. Williams said last month he expected camp would be “a hell of a lot more fun for me” this year now that he’s in sync with Johnson.</p><p>“I feel like I was drowning,” he said of last summer.</p><p>There’s been a lot of talk from the Bears, including directly from Williams and Johnson, over the last few months about how far ahead the team will be compared to this time last year, but it’s just talk until there’s proof. If it’s true, it’ll be evident with a smooth start to camp.</p><p>Williams is going into Year 3, and even accounting for all the turbulence he weathered as a rookie, this is roughly the time when most great quarterbacks find their way.</p><p>It shouldn’t take weeks or months for him to hit his stride.
